Group: alt.discuss.webtv.hacking Date: Mon, Apr 10, 2000, 10:20pm From: ulTRAX@webtv.net what got you interested in hacking? I'm one of those people that want's to know what makes things tick anyway... better yet, I love beating the system, finding the forbidden knowledge. Some of you may remember that I also had a career as an armature locksmith. Back in the 70's I was responsible for Citadel Locks recalling on model because I could pick their "ultra" high security lock with a simple device I made. A few years later my college roommate and I hacked the physical security of possibly 90% of the university we attended... we were even working on building alarm boxes. On some level that project continues. So I had that attitude coming in, but for months I was too fascinated with the web to bother thinking what made WTV tick. I had two PCs and never got into hacking with them. For a long time I thought it was finding out about DEMO that got me thinking... but it occurred to me today it was something else. In mid-Jan 98 I was transferring my account from a defective Mitsubishi box to a Sony. The serial number on the back was not sufficient so the Tech told me to use the 411 code to get to Tech Info. WOW! What other secrets did the box have? I was hooked. I left usenet where I'd post in anti-spam and pro-privacy NGs to look for more info in the WTV NGs. That's when I heard about DEMO. I was in shock that no one wanted to explore it... but only use it for bombing. I immediately tried to raise the level of discourse and my first hacking posts, are still around http://members.tripod.com/ulTRICK/archive/demoposts.html

Well, when I got WebTV it was the first major intro to the internet. I was amazed w/ web pages. I began learning more and more HTML to put my friends from school to shame by showing off my pages. I then heard of Perl, I began learning perl, logging my friends passwords and getting into there hotmail accounts and webpages. Then I found a link in a E-mail that was News:alt.discuss.webtvkillaz after a while the group died and I came here wanting to see just how far I could take my little black box, oh, and to tell my friends "My skills are better than yours, And I Have a WebTV!" Lmao!. and here I am today. c-ya

I got WebTV and all i did was chat. That got boring after awhile so i figured i would try something different, i discovered hacking. Ever Since i have craved knowledge of how WebTV Networks runs..basically i wanted to learn what made my box tick. And to all the people that say u can't hack on a WebTV, they dont understand this is WEBTV hacking NOT COMPUTER hacking, big difference.

How I got interested in hacking was when I watched my uncle break in to tricks. This got me very interested in hacking into WNI's deepest darkest secrets. And hey at least my uncle got a job out of it. Mabey I will when I travel into some new undiscovered frontier.

What got me into hacking? hmm.. good question..... I remember first getting on a computer and jumping on the web, viewing Webpages with color's, moving graphics, and scripts, it just amazed me! I would always get on a computer at school and explore everything I could and always get in trouble for being somewhere I wasn't suppost to be.........Like by-passing some Passwords. Even today when I am at school, I search out to bypass Bess™ <--Damn dog! Where's the Web-dog catcher!-- and other things on our schoo's Network. anyways, on to the answer to the question. I couldn't afford a computer, I remember seeing a ad on TV for WebTV and I went to Sears and ask them about it, they showed me and let me use it. I bought it a week later. So, I set out to learn HTML, i learned HTML and started building Webpages. I got bored with that and starting exploring other things like Chatrooms and newsgroups. I, for one have always been one to learn how things tick, even electronics, I will take them apart to learn. My box had problems connecting and they told me to press Options 3 X's and press 217. I was like, ok... and it brought me to the Dialing Options page and i was shocked. I wanted to learn what made WebTV Networks tick. I started with Demo and then when the first Tricks break-in came, they made me even more curious!! Later on, I went out to buy a WebTV Plus and learn everything that makes it tick from file://disk to Games Downloads to DoR! _COOLCAT200

Well its pretty lame, I found out the old Hotmail hack - http://www.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/username you could enter a person's mail if they had logged in within the last thirty minutes. After that I wanted to advance to webpages. I found this group, and after reading 2000 flames by Krakle and getting bombed by HackerReamer, I decided that this was my kind of group lol

Mostly all we really can do to match up with PC hacking, is telnet (which was really supposed to be called unix, especially since it uses unix commands. i.e: cd [root]) and social engineering (the gayest way to hack angelfire). Anyways. I started exploring wtv a few months after buying my box, when I found out about 411 and 07081969. -Who needs a sig? When you have intelligence?
Group: alt.discuss.webtv.hacking Date: Tue, Apr 11, 2000, 7:05am (EDT-1) From: BASICII@webtv.net (*&^%^&*) Re: what got me interested in hacking! in the early 70's, my first computer was the Altair....lame by today's standards, but it facinated me. As I turned 12, I recieved my first Amateur Radio liscense, and held a chess game on 20 meters using morse code with a fellow operator in Paraguay. The game lasted two weeks and I lost. This caught the attention of the local ops, and eventually, I was the President of the local charter(504) for Amatuer Radio.. South Central Bell sponsored the groups activities, and we were privy to facsimile machines, repeaters, and such. This is where I became interested in blue-boxing. The phone networks stimulated my curiosity, and my parents bought me an auto-patch, where I could blue-box through my radio equipment. This was wild! I was offering free calls to anyone, anywhere. Next the TRS-80 was out. I quickly caught on to Basic and BasicII, and had written games and utilities, and shared that with whomever wanted it. Then Apple II caught my eye, so I got one (still have it...lol). I was Lord Vekur in the MUD at that time, and many ppl were quite open about their hacking knowledge. This was my first real initiation into hacking. The usual hacks were accessing University computers and gaining root. Using Unix kinda just came natually after that. In all the systems and protocls around now, being on the Arpanet was the most simply vehicle of transfer. I joined the service for Radio communication, and got out to discover the "net" had grown cnsiderably. My next comp opened the doors to hackingjust a bit wider, and I was learning Q-Basic. The message-boards were becoming old any most of the good ones were not around....so I performed some social engineering on some of the local schools and attained root on my old high school's system! They had all my old records, but I was too chicken to change my status to Validictorian...lol. I had gotten bored with comps, so I started hacking cb radios. My kowledge of electronics gave me the edge needed to pump-up those 5-watts to whatever I could squeeze out of them...add extra frequencies, and modify them to talk i between channels. I still peak and tweak those radios today...but it's tapering off a bit. (alt.dscuss.hobbies.ham.radio). When the WWW was born, my wife became very hooked. She was always fallin victim to stunts pulled by my buddies and I.....our own test rat...lol My travels have led me to Webtv hacking. To share things advances the art. To hide things in the name of 'keeping it so it won't get killed or abused ', assures people in the future wil have such. Webtv hacking is truly an art in itself.

Group: alt.discuss.webtv.hacking Date: Tue, Apr 11, 2000, 3:26pm (EDT-3) From: jasmat14@webtv.net (Jasmat) Re: what got you interested in hacking? I've never really done any hacking, but I still am interested, I am not sure exactly why I got interested in the first place. I did get interested in what other PO codes there were when an operator at 1800GOWEBTV gave me 32768 and about an hour later 217. I went searching for those numbers and couldn't find anything about webtv so laid back a while, enjoyed my WebTV surfing experience (not that I don't now) and came across a bunch of Geocities pages; I forget where. The site WebTV Madness seemed interesting, with much more things that looked fun to learn compared to other sites with webtv so-called games. And chat ws always lagging...I was getting ready to give it up to my mother, but all these newfound tricks got me interested. The first ng I went to was a.d.w.html (obviously after webtv.users), followed by a.d.w.secrets and a.d.w.madness. I remember the postings about Demo, but many confused me because I never knew how to get there, lol. I was confused when someone told me to bring up the goto panel at "switch users"...I kept clicking on switch users first and then trying to bring up the panel, lol. Never got it right until I got a new account that fall. Back to March or so, I started visiting more ngs and eventually ran across adwh, when it seemed to me like it had been in existence for years. I think it was a link on either EekThaKat's site or someone named Paul...I was too afraid to post so I just read all these intelligent posts (except for the few flames) thoroughy and got a good deal of info, and when I finally asked a question or two, I got a few answers and got _really_ interested. I thought, "boy, I didn't think I'd ever get into hacking, and this sure seems fun!" lol. Then I screwed around a little where I shouldn't have and got my account deleted, oops. Came back in fall, learned that the old way to demo was killed, just missed the breakin, and posted in adw.powerhackers feeling left out, lol. And look at where grimio is now, lol.
